The federal eviction moratorium was scheduled to expire June 30, 2021. It will now run through July 31.
On June 24, 2021, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and administration extended the federal eviction moratorium which prevents the eviction of tenants who are unable to make rental payments until July 31, 2021.
Before the recent announcement, the moratorium was scheduled to expire June 30, 2021. The federal eviction moratorium was first ordered by the CDC in September 2020 and has been extended multiple times, making this extension the fourth of its kind.
This is intended to be the final extension of the eviction moratorium, according to the CDC.
According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau Household Pulse Survey, during May 26 – June 7, 2021, in California:
- 10% of rental households were behind on rent payments;
- 7% of rental households had no confidence in their ability to make next month’s rental payment;
- 14% of rental households had a slight confidence in their ability to make next month’s rental payment;
- 6% of rental households felt they were very likely to be evicted in the next two months; and
- 33% of rental households felt they were somewhat likely to be evicted in the next two months.
One-in-five rental households in California lack confidence in their ability to pay their next month’s rent and two-in-five renter households feel they are reasonably likely to be evicted within the next two months. One-in-ten households are already behind on rental payments.
For California, the eviction moratorium has been extended across various metros and have different end dates and additional tenant protections.
The federal foreclosure moratorium is scheduled to expire on July 31, 2021 for federally-backed mortgages.
